The Art of Discovery: Anthropologie Home Furnishings

As promised, today I’m going to share with you a few of the treasures I stumbled upon on a recent visit to Oakville’s Anthropologie store. The new store finds its home in a renovated and extended old bank building on Lakeshore Road in Oakville’s charming downtown core. The architects and designers involved in the design planning are in my good books. Rather than attempting to create a seamless extension off the back of the original building, they kept the gap between old and new on the second floor to create this lovely gallery opening above. I think it does a delightful job of narrating the story of the space by making it a feature rather than burying it into the proverbial woodwork.

Housed within this inspiring structure are countless inspiring pieces just waiting to be found. Just take a peek at a few of my fav finds:

A bold, painterly floral puts a modern twist on this classic bergère chair. Also love the burlap on the arm rests. It’s all about the details for this curvy little number.

I absolutely LOVE these Splattered Pull Up Chairs,  the perfectly proportioned occasional chair that could tuck quite nicely into a front entry, a nook under the stairs or in the corner of a bedroom in need of an infusion of colour and whimsy. The splattered denim upholstery, handpainted by New York artist Carol Horn, is what defines this chair’s refreshingly casual, carefree charm.

This vibrant orange linen upholstered Howell Wingback Chair is the perfect juxtaposition of a classic silhouette with a modern palette. Bold in its colour and yet simple in its textured loveliness, this is a statement piece to enliven any living room or perhaps to serve as “his and hers” chairs for the head and foot of a large dining room table.

These green antique French bistro chairs – complete with peeling layers of history in the form of perfectly chipped paint – are available as a set of four! A rare find at a reasonable price for the sense of story they will bring to the space they get to call home. They would be the perfect perch for morning coffee in the garden.

Another pair somehow makes me think of tennis matches played in long skirts in the 40’s. Perhaps it’s the shape of the chair back and the perforated metal? Onlookers might have comfortably taken in the game in simple metal chairs such as these – a lovely pair to bring a nostalgic warmth to any front porch.

Check out the recycled glass bottle chandelier! So unique.

And this one which was hand-made out of jute and melted plastic cups (among other things) by the amazing team of creative artists who work for the store! This one is display only, but here’s something very similar that you might be able to track down if this becomes a “must have” on your list!

They offer an endless selection of inspiring home + design books from which to choose. Well worth  perusing. “Paris Vs. New York” is already on my wish list.

Also offered is a lovely collection of cabinetry pulls for those looking to refresh an old dresser or side table.

Remember those antique signage letters I stumbled upon at the Christie Antique Show? These zinc letters have a similar feel and are available all year round…in every letter of the alphabet, of course.

Love this hot pink, ikat-upholstered linen sofa with the classic English roll arm style and turned wood legs. Feels like something I could have inherited from my English grandmother and then reupholstered in a contemporary fabric to suit my modern tastes.

As I’m sure you’ve discovered just from reading today’s post, Anthropologie is not just about apparel. In fact, the more time I spend in the store, the more treasures I discover for house + home. They will definitely be on my regular hit list for sourcing inspiring and unexpected home décor. And so we say: Welcome to Oakville, Anthro! We’re so delighted you’ve made yourself such a lovely and inspiring nest in our neck of the woods. We plan to visit frequently to see what surprises you’ve got in store for us.

The Art of Discovery: Anthropologie

I have a confession to make: I am an Anthro addict. This company seriously has my number. I discovered them years ago now on a trip to visit a friend in Seattle. We were wandering a lovely outdoor shopping mall and – like a moth to the flame – I found myself inexplicably drawn into the space. Once inside it was game over. The details, the artistry and the discovery of the experience had me lost in wonder. An hour flew by like it was 15 minutes. Since then I’ve always made it a point to find the closest Anthropologie store on any trip to the US, knowing that – even if my budget did not allow much take-home shopping – the experience and the eye candy would always be inspiring.

Oakville recently joined the ranks of a small but growing number of Canadian stores opened by Anthropologie. Part of the brilliance of the brand is found in the uniqueness of each of their locations, as there is always something new to discover with each store you visit. This is driven in large part by the artists-in-residence who work with tireless creativity to create a sensory experience that is filled with the joy of discovery at every turn. All of the displays you see are uniquely hand-crafted by these in-house artisans, and I think their work is nothing short of inspiring.

Remember last week’s post about the colour Tangerine Tango? These sail garlands – hand crafted out of reclaimed paper from old books and magazines – were painted in this succulent blood orange colour and then strung from the ceiling to create beautiful light-play with the sunlight pouring in from the massive windows. Wouldn’t this make a delightful installation behind a headboard in a bedroom? I’d forever be dreaming of sailing into the sunset…

One of my favourite displays can be seen right as you walk into the store. Hand-died cotton has been cut into wave patterns and then stitched into this engaging, textured backdrop to showcase the apparel and home furnishings at the front of the store. I feel as if I’m adrift on an azure sea just looking at it!

Wouldn’t this make a beautiful canvas somewhere in your home? I think we’ll have to attempt something like this for an upcoming Make Something Monday.

I just love how this art installation leads the eye to the texture study of this geometric-cut-fabric-backed settee at the front of the store.
This stunning, wood and tiled staircase leads upstairs, drawing you  further into the curated bazaar of beautiful things awaiting your discovery.

Tomorrow I will share with you some of the delightfully unexpected furniture pieces I found there on a recent visit. Anthropologie really is a treasure-trove of opportunity and inspiration. Can’t wait to share more tomorrow!

Foodie Fridays: 1000 Tastes of Toronto

We love the city of Toronto for many reasons, but one of them is that it is truly the most cosmopolitan city in the world. Cultures and nations from around the globe gather in this hub of business, arts and innovation, infusing the city with inspiring flavours and ever-changing tastes and menus. There are endless opportunities to discover the city’s culinary treasures, and one such delightful event took place just a couple of weeks ago in the Distillery District as a part of Luminato.

During 1000 Tastes of Toronto, these cobblestone streets are transformed for one weekend, filled with tents representing 40 of Toronto’s top chefs, each offering distinctly unique dishes all for only $5 per plate. I love the long, family-style tables that are set up throughout the District for people to sit together with friends and strangers alike as they savour the flavours of the city. There’s such a community feel to the set up! Makes me long for a good old fashioned family-style outdoor dinner party sometime soon.

Here are some of the dishes and chefs that captured our attention as we wandered:

Chicken, brie + roasted red pepper sandwiches on Ace Bakery baguettes from Santaguida Fine Foods.

Samosa’s and an insanely fragrant sweet potato curry from Amaya Indian Restaurant.

Cheeseburger Spring Rolls with Chipotle Aoili from LEE by Susur Lee.
Bacon Sliders from Enville Catering + Events.

Freshly shucked oysters or deep fried clams from Rodney’s Oyster House.

The wood-fired pizzas from Queen Margherita Pizza showed how fresh and simple ingredients can create a line up around the block.

But the longest line up BY FAR was for Chippy’s Fish & Chips. This was what my guys decided to go for and they LOVED it! They said it was well worth the wait, and I’m pretty sure Chippy’s made a killing over the weekend.

While my guys were savouring their fish & chips, I went for the braised lamb shank that was prepared by the team at President’s Choice. $5 lamb shanks! Come on. What’s not to love? It was so tender, juicy, flavourful and delicious that I’m going to have to try to reduplicate it soon. I’ll work on something in the kitchen and get back to you with a recipe if it works out!

If you haven’t already explored the Distillery District, don’t wait for the next 1000 Tastes of Toronto event! Just book a date with a friend who enjoys the art of discovery and spend an afternoon exploring. The wide, cobblestone streets lined with art galleries, furniture makers, restaurants and cafés are always calling out for a leisurely stroll and the surprise of what inspiration might await you around the next corner.
