One Room Challenge | Spring 2017 Edition | The Reception Furnishings

Docere Mood Board

It’s Week Two of the One Room Challenge, hosted by Calling It Home and media partner House Beautiful, and I have so much to share with you! Last week I shared our inspiration board with you, and this week I’m going to break it down and add to it to complete the furniture story for this inspiring space.

First, though, let me give you the lay of the land. Docere is a natural wellness centre focusing on a multidisciplinary approach to wellness, so the space has been broken up into a bright reception area, a large IV Therapy suite with nurse’s station, and four treatment rooms where Dr. Merrick will work alongside her growing team of practitioners for a very integrated approach to healing and wellness.

My main focus for the One Room Challenge will be just the reception area and IV Therapy suite. It is, after all, called the ONE Room Challenge. I’ve been known to push those boundaries before (remember my Spring 2016 ORC?), but I’m grateful I stopped myself at two spaces for this one as it is indeed an adequate challenge to keep us more than busy in the weeks ahead!

I came into the project rather at the 11th hour as Dr. Amber had done a brilliant job of keeping her new venture under wraps, working with an architect behind the scenes on the space planning and cabinetry. What that meant was hitting the ground running when it came to all of our selections – a bit of a designer workout if you’ll pardon the pun! The good news is I’m thrilled with how things are coming together, starting with our foundational furnishings. Today I’ll share more details on our plans for the furnishings in the reception area.

FOUNDATIONAL FURNISHINGS – A WELCOMING RECEPTION
The Cocktail Table

When it came to making Docere feel like a spa, I knew that elevated and elegant furniture selections would be essential to our success. I wanted each touch point within the natural wellness centre to feel considered and inspiring, so naturally I started by exploring the Bernhardt collection for the two anchor pieces in these spaces.

In the reception area, we needed a coffee table that was beautifully made and truly breathtaking. Needless to say, we didn’t have to work very hard to find one in Bernhardt’s stunning collection.

Bernhardt-Levine-Coffee-Table

The Levine Cocktail Table is a stunning example of simple elegance and exquisite craftsmanship. It is made from a delicate mosaic of gypsom veneers, a mineral-based material with roots in ancient construction techniques. Gypsum was used on the interiors of the Egyptian Pyramids, which are still standing 5,000 years later, a testimony to its durability. Today the mineral is mined or quarried and afterwards can be developed into a wide range of products. The Levine coffee table is made from what is called Alabaster Gypsum, which radiates an ivory brilliance, glowing from beneath its almost opalescent, high-gloss protective topcoat. Here are a couple of photos I snapped right after it arrived:

Dr. Amber literally squealed with delight when she saw it, and we both just wanted to stroke it lovingly with the affection it so clearly deserves. The way the light plays off of the finish of this piece is so ridiculously beautiful that it is undeniably the jewelry of the room. We can officially check “inspirational anchor piece” off of our list with this beauty in place!

The Chairs

To compliment the radiant glow of the Levine Cocktail Table, I selected one of my favourite modern classic chairs from Rove Concepts, the Ghost Side Chair. Lucite chairs offer an effortless elegance to almost any space, and the traditional shape of these armless chairs juxtaposed against the modern material use of lucite creates just the right kind of welcome for Docere.

Inspired. Delighted. Intrigued. Confident. These are just some of the words to describe how we want people to feel when they walk in the door of Docere, and Rove’s Ghost Side Chairs will help us tell that story.

The Chandelier

One of the elements that was very important to me was to make sure we went beyond the standards of a typical naturopathic clinic in striving for more of a spa-like environment. I’ve been to many a medical clinic and practitioners office over the years, and the main adjective I would use for most of them is clinical. Some are even depressing.

Not Docere. I wanted Docere to feel like a retreat from the everyday; a place you looked forward to visiting because it inspired you when you walked through the doors, and a place you were glad you visited because you left feeling more hopeful than when you came in.

To me, that meant going beyond expectations, including selecting a central light fixture to elevate the aesthetic of the reception area the moment you walked in the door. Enter the Possini Euro Elnora Chandelier from LampsPlus.

The elegant, random length strands of crystals surrounding this eco-friendly LED drum chandelier offer an organic elegance that is just perfect for Docere. I also love the nod to mineral elements in the crystals in the chandelier and the gypsum in the cocktail table, as they reference the elements of the earth that we draw from when balancing the body with natural supplements. It’s subtle, but I’m all about imbuing meaning into beauty, telling an authentic story with interior design to make each space a true reflection of its purpose and the people it represents. I’m thrilled both of these pieces can serve us in telling that story well.

What’s Next?

Next week, I’ll share more about the furnishings and design plan for the IV Therapy suite. For now, back to the mad dash to the finish line as we work to pull together a thousand details into one beautiful, meaningful, inspiring whole.

Wishing Godspeed to all my fellow design daredevils on this One Room Challenge adventure. Be sure to check in on their progress here and here, and I look forward to catching up with you again next week!

One Room Challenge | Spring 2017 Edition | Week One

Can you believe it is already this time of year again? Our bi-annual designer dash to the finish line has begun again this week as designers from all over North America band together and face the One Room Challenge head on. Six weeks to totally transform a space? Yes, it’s utter madness, but also the best darn catalyst for getting things done ever invented. Huge thanks to Linda from Calling It Home for creating this brilliant online design event, and huge thanks to all of you for tuning in to watch it all unfold!

I can’t dive into this fifth round (for me) without taking a moment to review with gratitude the four ORC’s that have gone before.

THIS EDITION’S FEATURE PROJECT + A BIT OF MY STORY

Having transformed a number of spaces in my own home, this Spring 2017 edition of the One Room Challenge takes an unexpected turn as I dive into transforming a brand new natural wellness centre for my brilliant naturopath Dr. Amber Merrick! How on earth did I come to choose this project for the One Room Challenge, you ask? Well, the answer to that question also answers the question of why I’ve been rather MIA on the blog and Instagram recently. I was recently diagnosed with Lyme Disease, and through that diagnosis I found Amber. (If you want to learn more about my health journey, come find me on YouTube at The Curated Life by Sarah Walker). When Amber shared with me that she was launching a brand new wellness centre, I naturally raised my hand and said “pick me!” to help with the design!

THE INSPIRATION

To me, a place of healing should feel more like a spa than a clinic. It should feel inspiring and hopeful and aspirational. The environment should make you want to be there as much as the lovely doctor herself! Needless to say, I had more than a little bit of personal motivation behind my offer to help Amber accomplish that goal with Docere, as I have been and will continue to be spending a lot of time with her as I work on kicking Lyme to the curb! So here’s to creating a healing environment that will serve the hearts and lives of many others in the months and years to come.

Here’s what our inspiration looks like:

THE BEFORE PHOTOS

And here, my friends, is the commercial and cold before in all its uninspired glory:

Docere-Before-1 Docere-Before-2 Docere-Before-3

I can just feel the fluorescent lighting and drywall dust chilling my bones! But what is a good reveal without a scary before to light a fire under this designer’s behind, right? I can’t wait to get to the after! For now, there is much to be done. Floors to be installed. Finishes to be finalized. Panel moulding to be installed and the whole place to be painted. Cabinets, counters, sinks and faucets to be installed. Cabinetry hardware to be selected and installed. Artwork to be selected and installed…and the list goes on! It will be so inviting when it’s done, but for now we’re in that messy middle that can never be avoided. Here’s to the other side, my friends!

Be sure to check back with me next week for an update on our progress and some of the decisions to be made! In the meantime, check out the other amazing projects being transformed in this edition of the One Room Challenge here and here.

Wishing you all a weekend filled with health and happiness!

How To Make Christmas Cards The Easiest Thing On Your To-Do List

Family-Christmas-2016

The best of all gifts

around any Christmas tree:

the presence of a happy family

all wrapped up in each other.

– Burton Hillis

HAPPY HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

Can we be honest for a minute? The holidays are, well, a complicated time of year. On the one hand, they can be happy and warm, filled with some of our favourite memories. On the other hand, this can be the “most stre-e-ssful time of the year.”

Fa-la-la-la laaaaa, la pass. the. wine.

Expectations – our own and those imposed on us by family and friends – can leave us feeling buried, and even worse, inadequate. This, my friends, is NOT the heart of the season. I don’t know about you, but I am doing everything I can to make each Christmas we spend together as stress-free and easy-going as possible.

That’s why my go-to for our holiday cards for the last few years running is Minted. Christmas cards used to make me feel overwhelmed. Now, they are a favourite tradition. Here are five easy steps to making your holiday cards one of the easiest things on your to-do list every year.

STEP ONE: BOOK A FUN FAMILY PHOTO SHOOT

We have created a lot of fond family memories doing our annual family photo shoots, and this year is no exception. The lovely Inna Yasinska did a brilliant job of making us all feel at ease in front of the lens. It just became play time for us while she captured special moments between us. I really feel like she captured the love and connection we have as a family, and that is a true gift.

STEP TWO: SELECT A CARD STYLE

I was going to say that this is the fun part, but the truth is it’s all the fun part! Minted has hundreds of holiday card designs to choose from. They’re all submitted by indie artists, which I love. There’s truly something for everyone’s unique taste. This year I went for something with a little bit of gilding, because gold foil + calligraphy = yes please.

STEP THREE: UPLOAD YOUR PHOTOS + CUSTOMIZE YOUR CARD

The templates make customizing your cards super easy, and this is a great way to create totally personalized cards without the dreaded Christmas Hand Cramp Syndrome.

*wink*

STEP FOUR: UPLOAD YOUR CONTACTS

Speaking of Christmas Hand Cramp Syndrome, Minted makes addressing the envelopes easy peasy too. Just upload your contacts and addresses and they will custom print the envelopes for you. If you plan to hand delivery some of your cards, you can leave off the address. Either way, you get a super pretty card that people want to open as soon as they see the envelope!

STEP FIVE: SIP, STAMP + SEND

Now that you’ve got your already-addressed envelopes, grab a mug of tea or a glass of wine. Get cozy by the fire, bust out the Christmas jams, and enjoy the ritual of stuff-sip-stamp-repeat. You’ll be done before you know it, and not a drop of sweat on that lovely brow of yours!

Two of my favourite new Christmas albums this year are by Lauren Daigle and Josh Garrels. I’ve added them to my playlist with classics like this one, and to be honest they’ve been on repeat since December 1st! In fact, these songs were the soundtrack to my Christmas Home Tour photo shoot with Reid, and they undoubtedly made the day that much more enjoyable!

So that’s it! My five steps to stress-free holiday cards. What are your secrets to a relaxed holiday? I’d love to hear how you’re making Christmas a time for relaxing and making memories! Share your favourite traditions in the comments below.

I’m going to take a break from the blog until the New Year, so until then, I leave you with these beautiful lyrics from another of my favourite artists, sleeping at last.

Merry Christmas, friends! May this season be one of peace and meaningful connection for you and your loved ones.

Snow

The branches have traded their leaves for white sleeves
All warm-blooded creatures make ghosts as they breathe
Scarves are wrapped tightly like gifts under trees
Christmas lights tangle in knots annually

Our families huddle closely
Betting warmth against the cold
But our bruises seem to surface
Like mud beneath the snow

So we sing carols softly, as sweet as we know
A prayer that our burdens will lift as we go
Like young love still waiting under mistletoe
We’ll welcome december with tireless hope

Let our bells keep on ringing
Making angels in the snow
May the melody disarm us
When the cracks begin to show

Like the petals in our pockets
May we remember who we are
Unconditionally cared for
By those who share our broken hearts

The table is set and our glasses are full
Though pieces go missing, may we still feel whole
We’ll build new traditions in place of the old
’cause life without revision will silence our souls

So let the bells keep on ringing
Making angels in the snow
May the melody surround us
When the cracks begin to show

Like the petals in our pockets
May we remember who we are
Unconditionally cared for
By those who share our broken hearts

As gentle as feathers, the snow piles high
Our world gets rewritten and retraced every time
Like fresh plates and clean slates, our future is white
New year’s resolutions will reset tonight

– sleeping at last
