One Room Challenge Spring 2016 | Week 6 | THE BIG REVEAL!

“Good things come to those who wait,

But better things come to those

Who work for it.”

DSC_4800a

Hello darlings, and welcome to my virtual “The One Room Challenge Is DONE!” dance party! You may not be able to see me dancing, but believe me, I am dancing, and I’m singing Sia’s Alive at the top of my lungs! I’m not gonna lie, It. Feels. Good.

My photographer jokes that I really should have called this one the “One Floor (And A Bit) Challenge.” He’s right. Because our main floor is so open concept, our living room makeover spilled over into zhushing the kitchen and dining room a bit, and even crept up the stairs with our lovely gallery wall. The good news is this: ONE, we did it! And TWO: we love it! I couldn’t be more grateful to be on the other side of this design dare, and I’m thrilled to be sharing the reveal with you today.

For simplicity’s sake, I’ll share the source info with you below each photo. I can’t wait to hear what you think, so please share your thoughts in the comments below!

And now, on to the dining room refresh! I can’t begin to tell you how much I love the softness added by the simple Kravet linen drapes, made sophisticated by the elegant trim detail banding the leading edge of each panel. As it turns out, softness was the theme for this room’s update, and the lambswool seat covers communicate that in both look and feel, making our Ghost chairs a much more comfortable perch for long, lingering dinners with family and friends. Also adding to the feminine edge is the stunning floral arrangement by Lisa Gray of Sweet Woodruff in the centre of the table. In my dream life, I’ll have arrangements from Lisa in my house on a weekly (or at least monthly) basis! Also on my dream life wish list is the stunning Serax Belgian tableware from Emily Quinn. So organic, so elegant, so unexpected. I couldn’t love these pieces more!

Up next is the zhush of the kitchen which was one part pretty and one part practical. The practical came in the form of an upgrade to touchless technology with our amazing Brizo faucet and matching soap dispenser. Practicality also came home to live with us via the glorious arrival of our Bosch dishwasher, the silent, panelled-in wonder that has made our lives forever better. The pretty is all about the transformation of the bookcase, the gorgeous Groundworks Channels linen faux roman valance, and the gorgeous copper accents from Wayfair.

I’m not going to lie, the bookcase makeover is my favourite change in the kitchen. The tension between the sophisticated and edgy Thibaut faux alligator wallpaper on the cabinet back, the more feminine leopard wallpaper-wrapped books with their calligraphy labels, and the Anewall portrait of a lady, elegantly framed and dipped in Farrow & Ball paint sets up my favourite kind of juxtaposition. It is both modern and traditional, a mix of masculine and feminine, a touch of classic and a dash of unexpected whimsy.

For now, I’m signing off with a heart bursting with gratitude for the amazing people who made this edition of the One Room Challenge possible: my incredible husband, Linda from Calling It Home, my supportive network of friends and incredible brand partners, and all of you amazing friends who have chosen to come along for the ride. Thank you for joining me! I hope you’ve come away feeling inspired for how you can tell your own story through designing your home one room (or perhaps one floor) at a time.

One Room Challenge Spring 2016 | Week Four

This week has been all about breathing and reminding myself of what matters. I shared most of the unexpected plot twists with you last week, and just to make sure I got the memo, a few more doozies showed up to round out the storyline this week. But  I’ve decided I’m not going to give them any more air time because I am here, things are progressing, and life is good.

It’s at this point in any project that I am reminded of the reality of the business of design: Schtuff happens. Always. No one is immune to it. Whether you are decorating one room, renovating or creating an addition, or designing and building a brand new home, the safest bet is to expect the unexpected.

The truth is, it’s our expectations that can get us into (or out of) hot water in just about everything in life. Expect everything to go perfectly and you’re setting yourself up for major disappointment. You’re also slowing your own ability to be flexible and meet the plot twists with strategic thinking and innovative solutions. Expect that things won’t be perfect and you’ll be ready to deke left or right as needed, dodging the punches life throws at you like a designer Mohamed Ali. I for one am working on being lighter on my feet in life. Float like a butterfly, right?

Butterflies are beautiful, and so are the details that have taken shape this week! First off, take a gander at the gorgy-gorgeous accessories that have been trickling in over the last few days.

horn-tray-faceted-vase

I’m totally in love with this horn handled tray from AllModern. It’s modern and classic with a bit of an edge and I love the beveled rim, because simple details make me happy. The vase is one I actually borrowed to style my last ORC space and I’ve been coveting it ever since, so I’m beyond thrilled that it is finally coming to make itself a permanent home here Chez Walker.

I’m also thrilled to finally share the unusual project I have been scheming with the gorgeous new Thibaut Panthera wallpaper. This paper is a part of the newly released Bridgehampton Collection of both wallpapers and fabrics, and the entire collection is STUNNING. I cannot wait to find a project for Demetrius, but in the meantime, here’s how I snuck Panthera into this project.

cookbooks-wrapped-in-thibaut-wallpapercookbook-labels-chalkboard-contact-paper cookbook-labels

After lining the kitchen bookcase in that stunning faux leather alligator paper, I couldn’t bear to just put plain old regular cookbooks back on the shelf. They needed to up their game a bit. Enter Panthera to wrap the cookbooks and elevate them to absolute edgy elegance. To label them, I just used this chalkboard contact paper, a liquid gold pen and my developing calligraphy skills. Not quite true calligraphy when just using a pen instead of a proper calligraphy nib, but the pen worked like magic on the contact paper and the whole thing was gratefully way easier than I anticipated.

I have to admit that I love styling. Many of my interior designer friends (if not most) hire a stylist for all of their photo shoots, but I could never do that. As I always say, details are a love language, and for me they are such an important way to make sure that your space tells your story. In this case, it’s a story that involves being obsessed with hand lettering since I was a little girl. Not a big deal, but a little, lovely detail that matters to me.

More styling details in the mix include these two Dwell Studio numbers that arrived this week from AllModern.

AllModern-Dwell-Studio-Box-Urchin

I get asked quite often both by fellow designers and design enthusiasts for my tips on styling, so I’m sharing my Secrets To Styling Like a Pro in this lovely little downloadable below. If you’re facing a bare bookcase or vignette waiting to happen and don’t know where to start, click on the image below to get started!

large-download-image

In other VERY exciting news, our gorgeous and super tech-savvy new Brizo Solna faucet and soap dispenser have been installed and I’m in germaphobe, touchless technology heaven.

kitchen-sink-brizo-solna

Please excuse my iPhone photo (I cannot wait for the professional reveal images, including the new faux roman valance that is on its way in the gorgeous Groundworks for Lee Jofa Kelly Wearstler Channels!).

You’ll notice two things in the photo above that make me VERY happy. First, you’ll see that the faucet handle is open but there’s no water flowing. This is because the Solna is equipped with Smart Touch technology, so all we have to do is touch it anywhere on the faucet or handle to turn it on and off. No getting raw chicken goup on my faucet ever again! All I do is use my wrist instead and voila! Happiest. Cook. Ever.

The second extremely happy detail in this image is barely visible, but it is the not-yet-paneled but super-incredibly-thrilling-because-it-is-finally-here-and-works-like-a-dream Bosch dishwasher to the right of the sink that was installed today! Friends, if you ever want to be grateful for this now-standard luxury appliance, live without it for four months. You’ll never complain about loading or unloading your dishwasher again. This baby is particularly exciting because it is one of the most silent dishwashers on the market and tricked out with extra racking at the top to allow us to max out the capacity. I also love that Bosch forgoes the food grinders that ALWAYS die in dishwashers (hello reason our old one is headed for the dump!) and use a food strainer system instead that is way smarter and more functional. Here’s a peek at the interior of this baby.

bosch-ascenta-dishwasher

I don’t generally want to get an appliance as a gift, but this beauty is the happiest present to arrive at my door in a long time.

In other news, I have a couple of fun art projects on the go. One is top secret and will no doubt be the showstopper of the reveal (though I’ll let you in on it next week and spoil my own surprise).

The second one represents my always-necessary dose of quirk for this project in the form of a dipped portrait inspired by one of my favourite artists and illustrators, Oliver Jeffers, and I need you to weigh in. I’m working with this lovely lady from Anewall and feel her demure demeanour will only be highlighted by receiving the Oliver Jeffers treatment by way of a gorgeous historical paint colour from Farrow & Ball. The question is, which colour to choose? The options are a delicious, classic red called Blazer or an energizing blue called Drawing Room Blue. Let me know which one you think I should use in the comments!

Also on the art front, if you follow me on Instagram you’ll know there have been some very exciting arrivals this week. First up, this evocative limited edition image by Jeremy & Claire Weiss via ArtStar which looks amazing all framed up in its picture-perfect Framed & Matted frame.

jeremy-claire-weiss-art-star

Also on the exciting art arrivals list from this week is this gorgeous signed, limited-edition Jaime Derringer print from Minted. I have wanted one of Jaime’s pieces in my collection for years now, and I love the dynamic energy this piece brings to the space, especially in its simple but modern Minted copper frame.

jaime-derringer-minted-copper-frame

As you can see, this week has been all about the styling details and art coming together. I still have the gallery wall for the hallway to complete (see the before below),

hallway-before

not to mention that top secret art project yet to finish and share with you all, and of course there’s the drapery to pick up and install, the rug still to be installed, LOTS more styling to be done, the sofa and chair replacements to confirm, more pillows yet to arrive, the gorgeous Essex chairs from Whittington to pick up, the kitchen to style, the whole house to clean because it’s basically turned upside down right now, and a whole lot more on my never-ending to-do list!

I know I’m not the only one beating back my to-do list with a stick! Be sure to check out what my fellow ORC design daredevils have been up to this week as there is some serious magic happening out there, friends.

Until next week, I’m off to git er done one to-do list item at a time.

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: FALL 2015 | WEEK FOUR UPDATE

Oh me, oh my, does the time ever fly! It’s been such a busy, blurry week that I seriously lost track of what day it was and almost forgot to post today! It’s a sign of the times, my friends. Lots on the ol’ plate.

THE UPDATE

All kinds of good things have been happening around here, like our Metrie mouldings being transformed into a gorgeous fireplace surround and mantel. If you follow me on Instagram, you caught a couple of sneak peeks of that in process. My furniture maker is seriously the bomb diggity.

That baby is now installed and simply awaiting the mantel top to be truly complete, and friends, she’s a looker.

The custom herringbone nero marquina mosaic from Creekside Tile is in the process of being installed as we speak and I lerv it. So classy. So timeless.

This week was also kind of like Christmas, as those lovely faux bamboo chairs from 55 Downing St. arrived, and after a little cross border adventure with my friend Rachelle to pick them up, they are now safely at home and awaiting their paint job. Noah made a suggestion for a different direction on the paint colour for them and – sophisticated 12 year old that he is – I agree with him, so you’ll have to wait and see where that is headed.

The rug arrived and to be honest there are some problems with it, so I’m putting on my English heritage “stiff upper lip” and managing that sitch all calm, cool and collected like.

THE FRAMING

In much better news, the gorgy-gorg frames from Framed & Matted arrived and I’m sooooo happy!!

Framing can be such a massive expense for any project, especially if you want great customer service and you want things done right. I’m thrilled that the lovely Chrissy has chosen to partner with me on this project and I have to tell you, her product is as fabulous as her incredible customer service ethic. Framed & Matted is currently only available in the US, so to all of my design friends south of the border, take note! Framed & Matted is truly a top-notch resource to keep in your designer arsenal of awesome.

THE ART IS MY FAVOURITE PART

I cannot WAIT to get all of the art mounted in these gorgeous frames. I’ve given you little sneak peeks at a couple of the pieces on the mood boards, but let me properly introduce you to some of the beauties that will grace this space with their soulful inspiration.

I have had this 12×12 stunner from fine art photographer David Graham White for awhile now and can’t believe it’s taken me this long to frame it up.

David’s process for this series is so inspiring: He photographed topiary gardens in the UK on old polaroid film, and then processed the polaroids using the heat from an old tube television, documenting the BBC channels that were playing as the polaroids processed. The heat flares from the television created the gorgeous and unpredictable saturation of colour that you see in the final works, and they tell the story of extreme control {topiaries} juxtaposed with the uncontrollable medium of television which invades our daily lives. We may attempt to control nature, but does media control us in the end? The intellectual dialogue behind these stunning works only serves to make them more beautiful to me.

Then there is this breathtakingly ethereal wonder from Zena Holloway.

I have truly been coveting this piece since I first laid eyes on it in Alessandra of Citizen Atelier‘s collection, and I’m still pinching myself that she has now come to live with us. I often struggle to feel at home with figurative artwork, but the ethereal sense of reverie and mystery in Zena’s work blurs the line between reality and fantasy in a way that I find utterly mesmerizing, transporting me to a place of imagination and wonder. For me, this piece is an elegant invitation to dream. Invitation accepted, Zena. Invitation accepted.

I really struggled with what to do with the art over the desk. I have a large shelf that used to house all of my product catalogues, but now that everything is available online I don’t need them cluttering up my space. Such a visual relief! In contrast to that utilitarian past, I wanted to make this space now feel airy and open and light, so I ordered three warm white frames from Framed & Matted. They will serve as the new home for a very happy little trio, starting with this incredible piece from Amy Friend.

This series, called Babushka, documents Amy’s deep bond with her grandmother. After her passing, Amy floated her grandmother’s nightgowns and scarves in water and captured their movement and essence in a most hauntingly beautiful, emotional way. I’m so honoured to have this piece in my home.

Complimenting the piece from Amy Friend are these two lovely limited edition prints from Minted.

I love how together they tell a story of wanderlust and adventure, of exploration and wonder. If I can instil those values in my boys I will be a very happy mama. If I can remember to live by them myself, I’ll be all the happier. I have no doubt this art will fuel me in achieving those goals – visual reminders of our core values of beauty, curiosity, gratitude and wonder.

I have one more piece to share with you – the one that will sit over the fireplace – but there’s a special project involved on that front and I can’t share it with you just yet. Stay tuned, as it’s all kinds of lovely.

THE GREAT SIDE TABLE DEBATE

So I picked up our Plan B side tables this week, and once out of the box discovered that they are way too pinky-copper for my liking. This photo belies the actual colour.

I’m all for mixing metals, but I need to actually like the shades of said mixed metals. So, back they go and it’s back to the drawing board for a rather close-for-comfort race to the finish line on this element of the room.

On the flip side, I picked up these beautiful acrylic column table lamps in brass from West Elm and they are perfection.

Classy, modern, timeless and just right for this room. I’m just waiting on the pair of Crane Floor Lamps from CB2 to come in and the lighting for the room will be officially checked off my list.

THE TO-DO LIST

I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to do at least one extra update post as I have a ton to get done this week and I want to make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun. So much of the action takes place right at the end of a project!

Here’s this week’s strike list:

  • Paint the bamboo chairs
  • Dive into my biggest DIY for this space: the custom pin board. I’ve got something pretty fabulous planned and am grateful to say I just yesterday found what I need for it, so stay tuned on that front.
  • Finalize all of the styling, which is probably a 3-full-days kind of job to get it just right.
  • Oh yes, and move all the old furniture out, move the new pieces in, get the drapery installed, hang the artwork, and somehow manage to continue doing my day job and care for my family in the midst of it all!

If you’re the praying kind, I’ll take it!

In the meantime, check out the progress of this ridiculously talented lot:
