Kitchen Wish List | The Urban Cultivator

From designers to foodies, today’s find is bound to get you seriously excited! I haven’t been this excited about a built-in appliance for kitchens since the Miele built-in esspresso maker and wine fridge. Well, there’s a new kid in town, ready to infuse any gourmet kitchen with a luxurious love of all things fresh and gourmet. I will seriously be dreaming about this one {neatly tucked into my butler’s pantry, of course} with nearly every meal I make from now on.

As you know, I love fresh herbs for cooking. Who doesn’t? From micro greens to fresh sprouts to the classics like cilantro, parsley and basil, any cook worth their weight in oregano would choose fresh over dried any day of the week. The challenge? Keeping them fresh in the fridge. How many times have you bought a bunch of fresh herbs only to find them limp and soggy when you pull them out to use them?

In response to this dilemma, we actually attempted to sprout our own herb garden from seed last summer. Let’s just say it was not exactly a huge success. We started out strong with some very exciting sprouts showing up under the lights and constant misting in the basement, but a few long weekends away and a couple of days of unexpected weather once they’d been moved outside and our dreams of organic, seed-sprouted herbs were dashed. We resorted to a few pre-grown pots and set our urban gardening dreams aside for the season.

Well, I’ve found the answer to all of our year-round herb-loving dreams. Friends, meet the Urban Cultivator.

The size of a dishwasher, the Urban Cultivator can be integrated into a fitted kitchen as a freestanding unit with a butcher-block top or easily built-in to any kitchen cabinetry design. This ingenious under-counter-sized greenhouse allows you to go farm-to-table without ever leaving home. Locavores take note: you can’t get much more local than this!!

The Urban Cultivator – a proudly Canadian innovation – offers the latest and best hydroponic growing technology with pre-programmed optimal growing cycles. It is plumbed to water and hooked up to electrical just like a dishwasher, automatically controlling the light, fan and watering of your four-season, under-counter kitchen garden. Genius. Add to that the fact that fresh greens cut from your own kitchen greenhouse have twice the nutritional value of store bought greens and I am completely sold!

Not surprisingly, the commercial version of this innovative appliance is being integrated into high-end kitchens in restaurants and hotels across North America.

“You simply add 100% organic food once a week and your chosen bounty of fresh herbs and greens will be on their way to your plate. After growing the basics, you may wish to move on to more exotic fare and expand your culinary horizons.”

It’s the details that make me remember a meal. I still remember a stunning salad I once had that was finished with delectable little micro beet greens. The possibility of plating and finishing dishes in my own kitchen with that kind of detail practically makes me giddy.

Needless to say, I am salivating over the possibilities and now officially dying to design The Urban Cultivator into my next kitchen project! Hope you’re inspired to go fresh and local today! No doubt you’ll all be dreaming along with me of your own urban gardening adventures.

Project: Kitchen Refresh | Lighting Option #3

If I’m honest, I’m rather giddy to be so close to a decision on the new pendants over the island. A change in lighting can truly transform a space, and given the broken and dysfunctional pendant that reminds me daily of its need to be replaced, I am starting to dance from one foot to the other in anticipation.

Even MORE exciting is that Lamps Plus has offered to sponsor my new pendants!!! So generous!!! Having been in business for over 30 years, Lamps Plus is the largest specialty lighting retailer in the US. They also offer accessories, furniture and home décor and even have American Lighting Association certified designers available in all their stores, by phone or online to offer product recommendations and advice on all of your lighting projects. I am so grateful to be partnering with such an amazing sponsor!

So, with all of that good news out of the way, I have another option to explore with you today. I must admit that I have a penchant for simple, graphic and modern spaces like this one.

All that white is the perfect canvas for the elegantly designed light fixtures and chairs to take their rightful pride of place. Simple, modern elegance. So, I found myself musing over the possibility of a pair of pendants such as this lovely modern, graphic punch of black from Lamps Plus:

I love the punctuated simplicity of its slim and unobtrusive profile, and the price is fantastic. I do, however, worry {like I did about the beautiful brass option} that perhaps the length of the shaft of the pendant itself would emphasize my less than dramatically high ceilings. Hmmm…

I would certainly LOVE to style my kitchen with a tidy row of gorgeous and dramatic glass jars of salts and spices from MARCH Pantry. Fine salts and spices in gorgeous black glass cannisters? Yes please.

Perhaps also a fresh and simple collection of coral from Layla Grace to nestle in with all of my cookbooks and some antique books in the bookcase.

And maybe a change to the counter stereo with this gorgeousness from Uncrate?

I like the mix of vintage and modern for sure. But for now, the decision is all about the light fixture. What do you think of Option #3?

Design Find | de Gournay Custom Wall Coverings

I have a confession to make. I love customization. From cabinetry to furniture to fabrics and finishes, I love designing pieces that are truly bespoke – tailored to my clients’ needs and tastes to truly personalize their homes. So whenever I stumble upon a company that is founded entirely on custom made pieces, they have my attention. Add to that a handmade process that is truly about the refinement of an art from and I’m utterly smitten.

With this confession out in the open, it should come as no surprise that I was immediately arrested when I first laid eyes upon the beauty of de Gournay‘s luxuriously high-end custom wall panels. Each wall covering is as unique as the space in which it is installed. But here’s my other confession for today: this post is an exercise in living vicariously. {Cue reminder: “luxuriously high-end custom wall panels.”} Consider today’s post an online visit to an art gallery of sorts!

These stunning wallpapers are carefully handcrafted in China, hand-painted on panels of silk, gold leaf, pearlescent glazes and paper. The process preserves refined techniques that have been passed down for generations.

The customization is so exacting that before painting even begins, an elevation sketch of the wall or space is presented to ensure that each architectural element is carefully considered. Doorways and windows are accommodated such that there are no interruptions to the beauty of the custom painted scene. Even light switches and electrical plates are taken into consideration!

These exquisite papers are now available this side of the pond at their recently opened showroom in New York City {243 E. 59th St.}. At the very least, add de Gournay to your list of “galleries” to visit on your next trip to the city!
