Oh Baby! | Inspiration, RH style

I must admit that I have never been one for “buying it all in one place,” whatever “it” happens to be. I love a space that feels like it has been curated over time {thus the name of this blog}. But I have been so surprised and delighted with the new RH Baby & Child collection that I thought I would experiment a bit and design a mood board using exclusively RH Baby & Child furnishings.

Before I share that with you, though, you have to take a good look at these images from the stunning RH Baby & Child Gallery in Corte Madera, California. No doubt these photographs will give you some idea as to why I felt that playing with an all-in-one solution might just work.

Pretty much totally gorgeous, right? And these images really are just a taste of the full collection.

There were about a dozen or more directions I could have gone with this mood board design, but I decided to start with what will be the most important piece of furniture in the space for me. No, not the crib…any guesses? Well, since I need to keep writing this post before you can answer, I will tell you. It’s the chair. This mama knows from experience that many, many an hour will be spent gently rocking in this room, and so the chair will be my throne of comfort and peace, so to speak. Translation? It needs to be seriously, unquestionably comfortable. I have yet to do the “tushie test,” but I’d say this RH Baby & Child chair is already written in ink on my wish list.

Here’s what I  l – o – v – e  about it:

* It’s a modern classic – a wingback with clean lines and no stuffiness in it’s simplicity, and yet a gentle formality that feels very welcoming.

* It is slipcovered. Even better, you can choose to have it slipcovered in the Perennials Textured Linen Weave  {as above in Sand} which is an indoor/outdoor fabric. Translation: if the babe spits up or the diaper fails as an adequate containment unit for a Bangkok blow-out, this chair can be cleaned. Easily. And the indoor/outdoor fabric will be more likely to repel moisture and stains. When you take “pretty,” add comfortable, and up the ante with practical and functional, I’m totally in!

* You have the option of ordering the seat cushion as down filled. When I think about the many bleary-eyed nights ahead that will be spent sitting up and feeding the little bean, the idea of a down pillow for my tush sounds about right.

* This chair is interesting enough that it can transition into another room of the house quite easily, making it a sensible investment.

* It swivels and glides. So when I drop {or, more than likely, when the little cherub throws} that board book just a bit behind me while we are reading, I won’t totally put my back out when I turn around to get it! I’ll just gently swivel the chair and voilà! As we were.

So working from the chair out {my version of “from the ground up” for this nursery} here is the RH Baby & Child inspired room I’ve pulled together.

I chose to go with a very soothing and gender neutral colour palette when I pulled this together, and have since found out that we are having…. {drum roll please} ….a BOY!!! I truly feel that this nursery could work just as well for a girl with a few touches of blush and lace and loveliness thrown in for good measure, but that said, I find it interesting that this design plan does work particularly well for a boy. Perhaps my instincts were already pointing me in that direction before we knew for sure? It’s fun to think so.

I have to point out the details on one more piece of furniture from this design plan that I really do love, and that is the crib. Not only does it look beautiful in its original state, but it converts into a very classic and – dare I say handsome – toddler day bed for when the comes.

I do so love it when form and function meet like this! In an age of waste, I am increasingly passionate about seeing furniture pieces designed to be adaptable such that they get a lot more life lived in them before they get passed on. Well done, RH. Well done.

There you have it! My take on a gender-neutral, totally RH Baby & Child nursery design. It will be fund to see where inspiration take us as I hear from more friends on their take on the dream nursery. What pieces from this collection do you love the most?

Oh Baby! | Jessica Gils Goes Nautical

Happy Thursday! I’m delighted to introduce you to my friend Jessica Gils today – a lovely young interior designer who is also a new mom herself! Jessica has pulled together a very charming, nautically-inspired nursery that has me feeling like I’m tucked away in a sweet cottage retreat. I love the calm and neutral colour palette, don’t you?

Curtains // Mirror // Wall Décor // Crib // Pillows // Bedding // Dresser/Change Table // Rug // Eames Rocking Chair // Floor Lamp

Of course, as always, I’ve done a little interview with Jessica so you can get to know a bit about the woman behind the design scheme!

How long have you been an interior designer and what do you love most about the industry?

I studied Interior Design at Sheridan College and Graduated in 2011. Since then I have lived my dream! It is an amazing feeling to go from a quick concept sketch to wiping clean your finished creation, standing back and then shaking the hand of your happy client.

How long have you been a mama and what do you love most about that new and exciting job?

I was just promoted seven months ago to the highest paying job of a lifetime – Owen’s Mom. The best part of being a mom is being able to have the opportunity to have a small glimpse of how God loves us unconditionally. His smiles and giggles are like food to me, but I wouldn’t recommend them as your main source of nutrition (speaking from experience).

Where do you find your inspiration for interior design?

I find the best inspiration comes from the client – their family, travels, compassion and hobbies. Finding the rich history behind these passions and displaying them for a better appreciation tells a deeper story in design. I love to pull inspiration from the midcentury modern era in combination with eclectic antiquities and add a dash of modern graphic. I also look to many Scandinavian designers for their simplistic style and family friendly living.  My favourite blog (besides The Curated House) is The Style Files by Danielle de Lange.

How has motherhood changed your perspective on work/life balance?

Being a mom has changed me completely! To paint you a picture, I had barely graduated from school, was just married, and had just started into my career. But after peeing on 6 pregnancy test sticks – and after 9 months of prayer – I knew when I looked into those new blue eyes that God’s plan is so perfect and wayyyy better than my “5 year career-focused plan.” As a dear friend said to me while at a Houzz conference, my feet swollen and only days before I was due, “Your most important project in your life is your children.” That really put things into perspective and put my priorities into check. With that said, being a mom makes you look closely at your own life and the things you wish to emanate to your children. Habits had to change in both my husband and I such as our relationship with our bodies in food and exercise, as well as inspiring creativity, compassion, and balance. I have also become an expert in time management and optimizing every moment spared to me (like writing this post while nursing – haha!).

What are your baby-mama “must haves”?

My mommy must haves are:
1. Family & Friends
2. Hydra Sense snot sucker
3. Kawaii cloth diapers
4. Coffee

How do you recharge and refuel to bring such positive energy to motherhood and design?

…Coffee

Describe your dream design project.

My dream design project would have to be my future house. Actually no…scratch that. That would probably be one of the hardest design projects of my lifetime. A very rewarding design project for me might be a community centre project like a recreation centre or a healing centre.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and your heart with us today, Jess! I have no doubt you will figure out just the right balance in your life as a mom and interior designer as you make your way through this adventure. Kiss Owen’s sweet cheeks for me!

Oh Baby! | Pam Ratzlaff of Sugarplum Sisters

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to a fabulous fellow blogger, Pam Ratzlaff. Pam is half of the dynamic duo that makes up the team at Sugarplum Sisters and she hails from the lush suburbs of Vancouver, British Columbia. As a lady who loves style, design and all things lifestyle and lovely, Pam is certainly a kindred spirit!

Pam has very graciously put together a mood board with her ideas for what would make for a fabulous nursery for le babe. Take a peek!

Crib by Land of Nod // Pendant Light // Birch trees with Birds wall decal by Surface Collective// Fabric for bedding, drapery and pillows from Tonic Living // Paint Colour – Snowball by Benjamin Moore // Honeycomb Wall Shelf by Land of Nod // Womb Chair + Ottoman from Eternity Modern // Tribeca Dresser from Restoration Hardware //

I’m loving all the grey {especially that faux bois fabric for the drapery panels…I really have a thing for faux bois}. I also really like how clean and bright Pam’s design feels. Pam says, “It’s been 10 years since I had my last bundle and I must say that furniture and accessories for nurseries have come a very long way!  I love a clean, modern aesthetic combined with organic elements….and I love to have a good mix of patterns too!”

“I went with a grey, white and red theme which works equally well for a baby boy or a baby girl.  If a boy arrives, mores grey or charcoal could be incorporated, and if it’s a girl, more red could be added (like red polka dot fabric).”

So fun! Pam also did a little interview with me so we could get to know a little bit more about this half of the Sugarplum Sisters team.

How long have you been blogging and what got you started?

Laurel and I started blogging in October 2011.  Laurel had worked in the fashion industry for Tommy Hilfiger and we had both worked in interior design for about 10 years.  We were finding it more and more difficult to work with clients as we were and are spending many hours in the day ferrying our kids to their activities all over the valley.  Laurel had suggested that we start a blog as it would offer us more flexibility and allow us to be creative in more areas than just interior design. We bounced the idea around for about a year and decided to just jump in and do it!

How would you describe your style?

When it comes to interior design, I love a clean, bright and modern look that combines hard surfaces like concrete and marble with more organic elements like rustic wood. When it comes to fashion….I love fun bright pieces and mixing patterns paired with classic items…think J. Crew.

What is your favourite thing about being a lifestyle blogger?

Being a lifestyle blogger is the perfect outlet for what I call my adult A.D.D.  As a mom you really need to multitask and can’t just focus on one thing.  Since having kids, I work better with multiple things going on so blogging allows me to write about all of my favourite things in design, food, travel, and fashion.  And as Sugar Plum Sisters we don’t just write our blog but we plan events, teach cooking classes, plan parties, and do room makeovers!  Blogging gives me a ton of variety and flexibility.

How old are your children and how would you describe each of them?

Berkeley is our oldest daughter. She’s 14 years old.  She’s very caring and maternal, has the best giggle ever, is a super loyal friend, a graceful dancer and an amazing baker!  Dylan, our middle daughter, is 12.  She’s a perfectionist, very compassionate, a charismatic dancer and is very passionate about most anything she does.  Maguire, aka Mac, is our youngest son.  He’s almost 10.  Mac is a leader, he’s sensitive to those around him, he makes friends easily, and he’s pretty funny too.  Mac lives and breathes hockey and is very dedicated to his training.

What do you love most about being a mom?

The best part of being a mom is seeing your kids do something kind or compassionate when they don’t know anyone is looking.  I’d say that the hugs and cuddles are up there too! Oh and when your kids find something they are passionate about…that’s pretty thrilling!

What do you find hardest about being a mom?

I’d say feeling inadequate as we come to each new stage.  We are in the teens now with our girls and they are fantastic kids, but parenting changes….I am still the mom but my role is different.  I seriously have lots to learn and many days feel horribly under qualified.

If you could do the newborn/toddler phase all over again, what would you do the same and what would you do differently?

I think I would try to enjoy the newborn stage more and just be more relaxed. I have type A tendencies and was very concerned about sleep and eating schedules. I think I would just try to chill more and soak in every moment.

What are your top survival tips for pregnancy?

I’ll be honest….I didn’t enjoy being pregnant as I was sick the whole time with all three of my kids.  But here are a few things…

  • invest in some good maternity jeans….jeans can be casual and dressy and you will probably wear them almost every day, so it’s worth it
  • be as active as you can and eat as healthy as you can….I wished I would have done more of that!  Always have some healthy snacks like almonds with you.
  • treat yourself to a pedicure during your last month…or more if you like!
  • do some special things with your hubby and son that might be difficult to do once baby comes along…like go to a movie or have dinner at a restaurant you may have been wanting to try

What are your top survival tips for the first few months after the babe is born?

I always tell moms to have no expectations for the first 6 weeks. By that I mean, don’t have expectations on yourself on what your house should look like, making dinner or getting the laundry done.  Sure…do the best you can but don’t feel guilty for what you don’t get accomplished.  Don’t book early morning appointments, sleep when you can, and accept help that’s offered.  If someone does offer help, maybe see if they could come and hold your baby so you can do something special with your older son…that was a great piece of advice a friend gave to me!  It really helped my older kids to not resent the baby.

How do you get away and recharge so you can bring your best to your family and your business?

I will admit that I was really bad at this when the kids were little!  As they got a bit older, Jason, my hubby, encouraged me to get away with my girlfriends once or twice a year.  I found different people who could help with childcare when Jason was working (like my college-age cousins or friends from church) and then he was Mr. Mom once he got home from work. It was good all around….I missed the kids and Jason terribly, but I came back recharged and Jason had a better appreciation of what I did (though he never made me feel guilty).

Now that the kids are older, Jason and I try to get away alone once a year.  We are both running in different directions throughout the year with the kids dancing and playing hockey.  I highly recommend doing this!  It’s investing in your marriage and reconnecting.  We also try to have a date once a week which is much easier now the the kids can stay on their own.  Some weeks the date is just lunch at home together, but it is time set aside to talk, reconnect and make each other a priority.

Ok, that was all personal stuff.  For blogging, there are a few things that I do.  I do keep a list of places that I want to visit in Vancouver (we live about an hour east of the city) and I do take time to get into the city to check them out!  I usually come home very inspired and full of ideas for posts…and I feel like I had a mini vacay!  Also, trips away provide inspiration for the blog!  We connect with other bloggers who live in the places we are visiting by Twitter and ask for recommends.  We have also gone to couple of Alt Summit Conferences…yes, there is such a thing as conferences for bloggers!  We come away with our heads spinning with so much great information and inspiration…it takes months to try to implement it all!  We just recently went to Alt San Francisco and took our hubbies along.  We stayed a few extra days and took a day to go out to Napa.  It was a fantastic trip and was great personally and professionally!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Don’t you just love her? I love your take on parenthood, that your proudest moments as a mom are when your kids are kind and compassionate, and that you are intentional about investing in your marriage to keep it strong. Pam, I can’t wait for the chance to connect over coffee {or perhaps a glass of wine by the time we see each other} in person! Thank you so much for sharing your insights on parenthood, marriage, blogging and being a very real but very fabulous lady!
Wishing you all a very inspired Wednesday!
