How to Create a Happy Heart Home with Erica Cook

It was love at first read when I stumbled upon Erica Cook‘s lovely home in the latest issue of Rue Magazine. I say “love at first read” and not “love at first sight” on purpose. Of course I’m all about Erica’s cool, eclectic, feminine, edgy and über-chic aesthetic. But it is her “happy heart home” philosophy that had me at hello.
It’s a tough thing to balance the pursuit of visual beauty with the pursuit of inner beauty and deeper meaning, especially in an industry that is as fast-paced and demanding as interior design. When your particular brand of “balance” also includes being a mom at the end of the day, the level of intention goes up about a thousand notches. This challenge is all too familiar to me, so I was immediately drawn to Erica’s higher goals and deeper philosophy as I read the article. I just knew I had to interview her.

Erica, you’ve had a really adventurous career – from working with Sarah Richardson and navigating the world of design television to moving to Calgary and launching out on your own. What principles have guided the roles and clients you’ve taken on over the years?

Yes, I feel very blessed to have had the fantastic work experience that I’ve had. Starting out with Sarah and the team there was life changing. I’m not even sure if they’d know just how much they moulded my future and career. I’ve learned over time that Sarah had a very unique approach, she’s one of the hardest working, most down to earth and creative people I’ve ever met. I also appreciated that Sarah is extremely versatile and can do any aesthetic well. I think that was one of the biggest influences I took away and that has still applied until today.
How are your design philosophy and your life philosophy similar?

It’s undoubtedly going to sound cliche but I really don’t sweat the small stuff. Things always fall in to place and when one idea or specification doesn’t work out something better almost always comes along. I believe it’s most important to keep your focus on the things that really matter. For me that’s family, and I try to incorporate that in to my design work. Sometimes without my clients even knowing. Spaces need to be conducive to living your best life. Last but not least I try to always treat clients as I would like to be treated. That’s important.
I just love Erica’s outdoor room. I think I’d escape here daily if I had a space like this!
How has your design business changed since you started blogging?

I actually don’t find that my business has changed much since blogging. Perhaps blogging buys me some street cred, however, I was established enough in who I am that it hasn’t changed me. The one thing that’s  been amazing is having a light shone on my own home internationally via other blogs and online publications. I do appreciate the community of great bloggers that are out there. It’s amazing that I can feel supported and inspired just by dropping by and visiting.
As a mom to one wonderful boy {and with a second boy on the way} I can’t help but admire you as a super-mom to FIVE incredible boys! What has been your mama-mantra over the years to keep you heart-happy, grounded and balanced?

Thank you Sarah. My boys come first. Always. When I have a project that’s starting to make home life unbalanced I pull back the reigns a little. Balance isn’t always easy but definitely worth striving for. At the same time, I’ve always felt that it’s important for my boys to witness me pursuing my dreams and accomplishing the goals I’ve set for myself.
How do you think being a strong and capable yet feminine woman has influenced your boys and their perspective on the world?

Fortunately and unfortunately my boys have been aware of my having to stand up and fight for what I believe in more than once over the years. I think they have a unique perspective similar to mine… cherish the people that matter, be polite and courteous still to the people that don’t, and never sacrifice your self respect or dignity. Having witnessed their mother be strong they seem to have the ability to decide what’s best for them and they are fearless about exploring the things they love. That intrepid spirit is perhaps the thing that makes me happiest when I catch a glimpse of it in them.

How do you know when your balance is off-kilter, and what do you do to bring it back around to a heart-happy centre?

I know my balance is thrown when I start to constantly feel that I’m forgetting something. When that nagging feeling starts to set in I know I’ve got to sit back and reassess.

What are you dreaming of for the next few years ahead? What makes you giddy with anticipation, what scares you just a little, and what fuels your dreams?

My plan is to continue to explore other ways of expressing myself, some of which I’ve done before and some things maybe I’ll discover for the first time. I’ve made jewelry in the past and am excited to return a bit of creative focus there, but I’ve also been turning some attention to picking up a paintbrush again. My grandmother was an artist and painting feels like a great way to reconnect with her, like I did so often as a child, now that she’s gone. It takes me to a happy place. I’d like to pepper my design career with some further exploration of both. I’m open to new challenges and believe they’ll come my way when I’m ready. In the words of Tina Fey “say yes and you’ll figure it out after.”

. . . . .

Thank you so much for sharing your philosophy, your home and your open heart with us, Erica. I have no doubt this year will bring you many opportunities to explore your gifts further as you continue on your design adventures with Moth Design {Making Others Truly Happy}.

Update 1 | Project Debonaire Young Sir

Having introduced you to my latest project a couple of weeks ago I thought it was time for an update. Remember the totally fabulous Tommy Smythe inspiration?

{Image via House + Home}

Well, it really is just my jumping off point, but there are a few details that I definitely want to include:

Antiques
Brass
Black
Graphic pattern

I also want to include some of Noah’s love for a more Scandinavian aesthetic {did I mention he’s rather sophisticated?} as well as a touch of whimsy. So while Tommy’s spectacular space is our jumping off point, I have no doubt we will land on something altogether different and uniquely personal to my Debonaire Young Sir.

Here’s where I’m at so far. I have ordered these gorgeous chevron bed linens from West Elm. Bit of a wait as they are backordered and being shipped to my girlfriend in Brooklyn once they are back in stock, but I love the graphic punch they offer and they feel like a good bridge between sophisticated and kid-friendly. I also love that they are made of organic cotton, and the sketched quality of the pattern softens the graphic punch just a bit. Noah loves to draw and sketch so there’s a subtle little nod to his passions right there in the bedding. Feels like a win!

I admit I have scoured the earth in search of an affordable pair of Louis Phillipe commodes – not for Noah’s room but for mine – and have come to realize that my taste often exceeds my budget. Le sigh.

So rather than searching for one for Noah’s room {I’m saving that splurge for mama’s room!}, I’ve decided to paint his existing dresser {project to come} and see what I could find in the way of French art deco side tables. And I totally scored. Found this pair on eBay and won the auction! Very, very excited as I think they’ll add the perfect touch of sophistication I was looking for. I love the mix of masculine and feminine in the curved doors and base and the rectilinear lines of the overall frames, not to mention that the walnut veneer creates a chevron pattern of its own. Have I mentioned I’m obsessed with all things chevron and herringbone? Like a moth to a flame…

Next on my list were the table lamps {I’ve been busy!}. I splurged just a bit on the side tables so needed something really reasonable to offset that cost…enter Nate Berkus and Target to the rescue! I’m getting that hit of brass I was looking for with this lovely little pair, and I love the rivet details. They feel very industrial modern and Noah loves them!

For the shades I went with black for a nice level of contrast {black drum shades are always a classic}. Although this photo doesn’t show it, they have a subtle but clearly visible herringbone weave to the fabric. *wink* Also Nate Berkus for Target, also trés reasonable. Merci beaucoup, Monsieur Berkus!
And that’s about it for now! Oh, except this very exciting little tidbit. I am beyond thrilled to tell you that the drywaller is finally coming today! {ahem…that bears repeating} The drywaller is coming today! Let the mudding and taping {and endless dusting and vacuuming} begin! Hoping by next weekend we’ll be moving on to the baseboards and crown. Then painting and then finally installing the gorgeous Cole & Son wallpaper in the bathroom! Oh friends. I can’t wait to share that glorious day with you! It cannot come fast enough. Plus I have a little surprise in store for the hallway. You’ll want to stay tuned. I just need to take my patience pill through this slower phase of things coming together. Good things do come to those who wait {and work their tails off in the meantime!}.
Happy Thursday!

An Update on Project Ugly Duckling + an Intro to Project Debonaire Young Sir

I don’t know if I can get an “amen” on this one from any of my fellow migraine sufferers, but this weather has been giving me a run for my money lately! At least I think it’s the weather. Apparently we are in for another week of rain here in Ontario, which is not exactly the best news I’ve heard all year. Ugh. These are the weeks I start packing my bags and buying us all one-way tickets to California. You’d come with me, right? At least, those of you who aren’t there already!

{source}

Well in the midst of the gloom and glum of overcast skies and endless wet, good news keeps arriving in inconspicuous cardboard boxes via my friendly neighbourhood FedEx delivery man. Firstly, the wallpaper has arrived for the bathroom!! The rolls are actually bookmatched to one another so that the pattern is wider than your typical wallpaper and feels more like a mural. Decadent! I. Can’t. Wait. To. Get. This. Fornasetti. Gorgeousness. Installed. In. My. Home! Colour me giddy.

Another lovely delivery to arrive by post this week are my sconces for the bathroom. I wanted something simple, slightly retro and even nautical/industrial in feel while still modern and fresh. I’m really happy with the look {and the deal} of what I found. I ordered two of these Possini sconces from Lamps Plus which arrived lickety-split. No fuss. No muss. Very happy.

OK, it is now confession time. Yes, I wanted to go with satin brass on all of the fixtures in this bathroom. Naturalment. But I had already purchased the towel bars and other accessories in chrome a year or more ago when we renovated the other bathroom, thinking I would want all the bathrooms in the house to flow. While on the one hand I’m sad that my need for brass cannot be fulfilled in this space, on the other hand, the chrome faucet I’ve order was a fraction of the cost it would have been in satin brass. And chrome never dates. So I am content.

I’m also excited, because the hallway that connects to this bathroom {the one that is now adorned with that gorgeous chevron floor} also connects to a bedroom {formerly my design office, which I’ve moved} and we have decided to transform it into Noah’s new “suite.” He’s a rather sophisticated little monsieur, so I’ve decided to call this Project Debonaire Young Sir.

I’m basing the inspiration very loosely on one of my favourite bedrooms by one of my favourite fellow designers: Thomas Smythe. Tommy Smythe has officially got debonaire down to an art form.

Much will be different about our space, of course, as Noah wants cream walls rather than charcoal and mama can’t afford to get her sweet little prince a Louis Phillipe commode just yet…but, the mix of pattern, the gallery wall, the nod to colonialism…well, I hope to include a dash of all that goodness with a little whimsy thrown in for good measure!

Still waiting on the mudder/taper to get in here and finish the walls so we can get the baseboards, crown and trim up. It’s a good shot to the arm to have fun things arriving in boxes right now as it makes me feel like progress is still being made, even if the rooms are kind of at a stand-still right now.

{drums fingers on desk and looks up number of drywaller again}

It’s so hard to wait when the Ugly Duckling is showing signs of her inner swan emerging! But many years in this business have taught me that it will be worth the wait. Sigh.

Wishing you all a very happy, inspired Thursday!
